Dr. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, the First Lady of Nigeria, offered her sincere apologies to Nigerians on Friday for the difficult economic conditions and sense of insecurity that the government led by Buhari endured.
Speaking at the Shura-themed 62nd Independence Day Public Lecture and Special Juma’at Prayer:Dr. Buhari addressed the Islamic Foundation for True Democracy in Abuja’s National Mosque Conference Hall, stating:
“I want to take advantage of this opportunity to ask for forgiveness from the Ulamas and Nigerians as a whole, even though the regime might not have been perfect. To make Nigeria better, we all need to work together.
She urged Nigerians to pray for a peaceful change of government in 2023 and said that citizens must band together to bring normalcy and peace to the country’s most troubled areas.
She went on to say, “Your Excellencies, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, as you may be aware that this government is making its exit and perhaps witnessing the last anniversary of the regime, I ask Nigerians to pray for a successful election and transition program.” She referred to the current administration as the “Government of Nigeria.”
“I want to take advantage of this opportunity to ask for forgiveness from the Ulamas and Nigerians as a whole, even though the regime might not have been perfect. To make Nigeria better, we all need to work together.
“Your Excellencies, distinguished guests, it is also evident that our Naira is being evaluated and that the foreign exchange rate has affected our economy, causing a great deal of hardship and difficulties for our citizens in terms of education, health, and other day-to-day activities.”
She said that Nigerians “must unite and fight against security challenges,” while appreciating the efforts made by security agencies to combat terrorism.
I’m particularly pleased that our security personnel have overcome security obstacles more effectively than ever before. In addition, their efforts are currently pushing the effects of banditry, kidnapping, and numerous other social problems.
Mrs. Buhari continued by saying, “I commend the efforts of our gallant security men and women and I want to pray for more successes in their operations.”
She stated that her office has implemented numerous programs in fields like agriculture, entrepreneurship, and the engagement of youth and women to cushion the effects and provide alternatives to supplement the government’s efforts to improve the welfare of citizens.
“I have deliberate efforts and programs focused on improving the quality of women, youth, and children through my Aisha Buhari and Future Assured Foundation.
I have empowered numerous communities as a result of this effect.I thank all of my partners and collaborators, including governors’ wives, service chiefs’ wives, associates, well-wishers, and international organizations that are development partners.
At the event, Senate President Ahmad Lawan represented President Muhammadu Buhari.
