Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, has criticized Minister of Labor and Employment Chris Ngige for allegedly authorizing the partial payment of union members’ salaries.
In October, the National Industrial Court ordered the lecturers to resume their jobs, putting an end to the ASUU’s eight-month strike.
ASUU announced on Monday that it would organize a nationwide one-day protest against the partial payment.
“He (Ngige) has lost his right to be a conciliator because he has gone to court. He has lost his authority as a conciliator as a result of taking this case to the Industrial Court;Osodeke stated, “He’s still interfering, but he has no say again.”
The ASUU president responded, “He has nothing,” when asked about the Minister of Labor’s current involvement in the situation. He is a foreigner. It is beyond him if we refer to him as a conciliator.
“And we have discovered that he personally wrote to the Minister of Finance, not with instructions, requesting that our salary be stopped.Simply personal. We are surprised because, given that he has taken the case to court, he should have no options. He has nothing to do with our activities.
