Christians in the north choose a consensus candidate over the APC

In opposition to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Northern Christian leaders under the leadership of the immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon.In an effort to defeat the party’s Muslim-Muslim ticket, Yakubu Dogara and Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, have made the decision to collaborate with their Muslim counterparts in the North to adopt one of the APC presidential candidates.

During the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Hon., this was included in a communique that was jointly signed by a former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State and minister of Water Resources.A copy of Mukhari Shagari and Dogara was provided to The Star on Sunday.

Following their consultative meeting with Northern Muslim Political Leaders that took place on Saturday at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja, the Northern Christian leaders came to the conclusion that “we have agreed to work together with a view to fostering unity, peace, and national cohesion.”
“To collaborate and adopt a pan-Nigerian political platform that will foster unity, inclusion, and a sense of community among Nigerian citizens.

“Conscious of Nigeria’s multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multi-cultural configuration, we believe that voting according to religious lines and a ticket of the same faith may cause dangerous dimensions of negative consequences among our disparate peoples in ways that will impede the development of the nation.As a result, we have agreed not to support political attacks on sensitive religious issues but rather to focus on issues that bring us closer together as a people.
The communique stated, “In view of the foregoing, we have agreed to establish a committee with the mandate to fashion strategies for advancing the objectives set forth in this resolution.”

Mukhtari Shagari, Boni Haruna, Abdulfatah Ahmed, Damishi Sango, Senator Idris Ahmed Umar, Yomi Awoniyi, Simon Achuba, and Ummara Kumalia were also present at the meeting.
Baba Shehu Agaie, Air Marshall Monday Morgan (Rtd), General Ishaya Bauka (rtd), Mohammed Sani Sidi, and Hon John B. Bawa, among others, were additional individuals.
