An attack on a Celestial church in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State, has been attributed to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
According to Akahi News, the six insurgents attacked on Sunday night, wounding three worshippers and killing at least two of them.
It was learned that the assailants stormed the church in a ferocious manner and began firing at those in the area. The Federal Medical Center (FMC), Lokoja, is said to be treating the injured victims at the moment.
William Ovye Aya, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident by stating that the command received a distress call about criminals entering a Celestial Church behind the NNPC mega station and beginning to shoot.
Counter Insurgency Expert Zagazola Makama tweeted on Tuesday that ISWAP had stated that its fighters were responsible for the attack in the state.
The feared terrorist organization has a camp in Okene forest, where it coordinates attacks in Kogi State, according to the terrorism expert.
Makama went on to say that because they were unable to coordinate their attacks on military positions, the terrorists have increased their attacks on soft targets, particularly churches in remote communities.
He disclosed that the terrorists had destroyed the structures of the EYN Church in the vicinity of the Biu Local Government Area, looted food and other valuables, and set them on fire.
