Following a court order to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end its eight-month-old strike, the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife has announced a schedule for the resumption of academic activities.
OAU informed the students that academic activities will begin on Thursday, October 20, 2022, in a statement that was made available to newsmen in Osogbo and was signed by the university’s Registrar and Secretary to Council.
Students were instructed by the school administration to return to the Halls of Residence on Wednesday.
“The students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have been directed to return to Halls of Residence on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, while full academic activities will begin on Thursday, October 20, 2022 for the continuation of the 2021/2022 session,” read the statement.
“The decision was made at a special meeting of the University Senate on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, in Oduduwa Hall.
“We wish our students an uninterrupted academic session and a safe trip from their respective locations, on behalf of the Council and Senate of the University.”
Akahi News recalls that the ASUU had been on strike since February 14 for a variety of reasons, including its demand for increased funding for universities and a review of lecturers’ compensation.
However, prior to the union’s appeal being heard, the Court of Appeal had on October 7 ordered the union to call off its strike.
ASUU members were instructed to resume work last Friday in accordance with the court’s decision, despite the fact that the issues facing the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration have not yet been resolved.
