WHAT IS A TIN?

The Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a one-of-a-kind number used to identify an individual or business for tax purposes. In terms of paying taxes in Nigeria, your TIN is your identity number. Every person and business in Nigeria is required to have a unique tax identification number (TIN) because paying taxes is a requirement. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) issues TINs to individuals, businesses, or organizations.

Why TIN?

Tax payment is a legal requirement for both individuals and businesses. Each business must have its own distinct TIN. It is expected of you to go to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) nearer to you to obtain your business TIN as soon as your company is registered in Nigeria.

You need TIN to do many things mostly as a corporate organization (business or company). Apart from TIN registration is mandatory in Nigeria for every registered business, TIN number helps you to::

HOW TO APPLY FOR TIN IN NIGERIA?

Just walk into any Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office that is closest to your registered address and FIRS staff will give you application form to fill.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKES TO OBTAIN TIN?

Your TIN number can be issued to you in some minutes if the office is less busy and their network is friendly. But generally, it takes one or two days to obtain TIN in Nigeria.

I always encourage people to make these two (TIN and VAT) applications together because, it does not cost money and the process and requirements are almost the same at the same place.

  • Certificate of Incorporation:
  • CAC2, CAC7
  • Memorandum & Articles of Association
  • Company seal
  • Utility bill
  • Application letter on company letter headed paper for TIN and VAT.
  • Duly completed TIN Application form
  • Duly completed TIN Application form

Applying for your TIN and VAT in Nigeria is FREE and you can do it by yourself if you want.

This is to notify the general public that the FCT Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) will embark on mass registration of taxpayers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). In compliance with Joint Tax Board (JTB) requirement for biometric data capture for TIN generation to ensure the uniqueness of Taxpayer Identification, FCT-IRS will leverage on biometric data already capture by some agencies and institutions, which include:

  1. Joint Tax Board (JTB) — Taxpayer Identification Number (JTB-TIN);
  2. National identity Management Commission (NIMC) — National Identity Number (NIN); and
  3. Banks — Bank Verification Number (BVN).

Therefore, Ministries, Departments, Agencies, Corporate organizations and individuals are requested to come forward for the TIN Registration. MDAs and corporate organizations employing and more staff, should forward the list of the staff together with their biod.ata and unique identifiers for the issuance of the unique Tax identification Numbers. The information for each staff and/or Taxpayer should include: Surname, First Name, Residential address (Address line, LGA, Town, State), NIN or BVN or JTB TIN, OSM, Email and Date of Birth.

How to apply for tin:

individuals

Individuals can now apply for TIN online using their Bank Verification Number (BVN) To get a TIN as an individual, you need to have a NIN or BVN.

Non Individuals such as (Limited Liability Companies, Incorporated Trustees, Enterprises, Cooperative Society, MDAs, Trade Association etc) can register for their TIN online by clicking  here.

Easy Steps On How to Get Tax Identification Number (TIN) in Nigeria Online

A tax identification number (TIN) is a unique number used for tax purposes in Nigerian and other countries.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is an agency of the Nigerian Federal Government responsible for issuing the tax identification number to Nigerians in conjunction with the Joint Tax Board.

You can get this number as an individual or for your business online by following the procedure below.

TIN Registration Process for Individuals

Individuals are automatically assigned a tax identification number based on their Bank verification number (BVN) or National Identification Number (NIN).

  1. STEP 1: Visit the verification portal – Joint Tax Board.
  2. STEP 2: Select your date of birth.
  3. STEP 3: Select your preferred search criteria (BVN, NIN or registered number) from the drop-down menu.
  4. STEP 4: Enter the digit of the search criteria you selected in the previous step. e.g. if you selected BVN in STEP 3: enter your BVN digit.
  5. STEP 5: Click the reCAPTCHA box to verify that you are not a robot.
  6. STEP 6: Click search to get your TIN

  1. STEP 1: Visit the verification portal (https://tinverification.jtb.gov.ng/Template/TINVerification
  2. STEP 2: Select the date of incorporation of your organization
  3. STEP 3: Select your preferred search criteria (BVN, NIN or registered number) from the drop-down menu 
  4. STEP 4: Enter the number in the search criteria you selected in the previous step. e.g. if you selected BVN in step 3, enter your BVN digit. Note that the CAC registration number should be typed in BN1234 or IT1234 or RC1234 format.
  5. STEP 5: Click the reCAPTCHA box to verify that you are not a robot.
  6. STEP 6: Click search to get your TIN

How to verify TIN Pin

  1. STEP 1: Visit https://apps.firs.gov.ng/tinverification/
  2. STEP 2: Select your preferred search criteria (BVN, NIN or registered number) from the drop-down menu
  3. STEP 3: Enter the digit of the search criteria you have chosen. CAC registration number should be entered in BN1234 or IT1234 or RC1234 format.
  4. STEP 4: Input the correct captcha image displayed
  5. STEP 5: Click on search to verify your TIN pin.

How to Create a Tax Identification Number (TIN) What Is a TIN?
An individual, registered business, or incorporated company receives a unique Tax Identification Number (TIN) for tax purposes. The Tax Authority creates TIN, or Tax Identification Number, to ensure that more people enter the tax system and maintain order.

The creation of TIN is divided into two categories: TIN for Individuals and TIN for Organizations. How to Generate TIN for Individuals Individuals can apply on the JTB website using their NIN or BVN (Bank Verification Number), or they can go to your local Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) with a utility bill, a valid ID that has been approved by the government, and a passport photograph.

How to Generate TIN for Organizations Other Than Individuals Other Than Individuals include Cooperative Societies, Limited Liability Companies, Incorporated Trustees, Enterprises, MDAs, and Trade Associations, among others. can submit their Certificate of Incorporation, Director’s BVN or NIN, and a current ID of Directors to the JTB website to register for their TIN.
Your request will be approved after it is checked. The TIN Certificate can be obtained in hard copy at the FIRS Office or sent automatically to the registered email address.
However, because of issues with system integration between FIRS and JTB, both individual and non-individual registrations made on the JTB website will need to be redirected to the closest FIRS Office for proper activation and validation for major government agency operations like Nigeria Customs, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and the Standard Organization of Nigeria.
